Our History

Established in the year 1900 by John J. Jennings, in the “undertaking” service in North Scranton, with a livery service of horse drawn carriages. As years passed the services evolved into the Funeral Home, which was located on West Market Street, Scranton. Mary Jennings, FD (John J. Jennings’s daughter) joined the firm in 1947 continuing the operation of the funeral home. She was one of the first female funeral directors to be licensed in the nation. In 1980, Christopher C. Calvey FD, ( great nephew of Mary Jennings ) joined the family practice of Undertaking and operated the Funeral Home on West Market Street, in Scranton, Pennsylvania and branched out to acquire the a Funeral Home in Clarks Summit in the same year, 1980.


The funeral service has evolved from the embalming in the family home, wakes at the corpse house, horse drawn coaches, as well as the services provided by our family of funeral directors. “Corpse house” as many northeastern Pennsylvanians refer to as the visitation at the funeral home stemmed from visiting the home of the deceased with the embalmed body present and visitors expressed sympathy to loved ones.


As the third generation of funeral directors, Christopher C. Calvey after expanding the Funeral Service to Clarks Summit in 1980 and established a Monument business. Jennings – Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. provides professional friendly service in a modern facility with state of the art equipment.


In preparation for the families in need of funeral services and the as a percentage of our population nears retirement and the baby boomers are deciding their last wish, changes are continually made offering families choice of memorials, burial entombment or cremation with memorial services. There is a need to provide choice to families and their personal wish to be cared out in a befitting manner to their life style.
