Florence Brennan

Florence M. (Olah) Brennan, 97, of South Abington Township, died on Tuesday in Allied Skilled Nursing.  She was the wife of the late Francis "Bud" Brennan, who died in 1978.

Born May 9, 1923 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine (Novak) Olah.

Florence graduated in January 1941 from Scranton Tech High School.  Prior to retirement, she worked in the Traffic Department of the A&P General Offices, managed the cafeteria at Abington Heights Jr. High School and was the cook at Our Lady of the Snows Church.

Florence was a vibrant, cheerful person, even at the end of her long life.  She was a talented musician, having a trained operatic soprano voice.  Before her marriage she was a member and soloist of the Schubert Society, Opera Society of Scranton, and many other choral groups.  She was a soloist at numerous weddings and funerals and continued her love of music well into her 80’s, being a member of the Our Lady of Snows choirs and serving as a cantor there for many years.  She used to say, “I’ve sung in almost every church in the area, no matter the denomination.”

Florence had been a devout member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic church in Clarks Summit for over 60 years.  She was involved in every aspect of parish life, including the Friday Morning Company, Renew groups, Women’s Guild, leading the food preparation for the Country Bazaar, and as Eucharistic Minister to the sick.

She was a great cook, being famous for her baked goods, especially her pies and cinnamon buns.  She loved to entertain, was a shark at pinochle, and enjoyed traveling to Wyoming and Texas with members of her graduating class, and to Europe with her daughter.

Surviving is a daughter: Mary Erin Brennan of Three Bridges, NJ; daughter in law Millie Brennan, Newark, DE, grandchildren Sean Brennan, York PA, and his wife Beth, Tim Brennan, West Chester PA, and his wife Leslie, and Kate Brennan, Newark DE; 7 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her stepson, James F. Brennan, and brothers, John H. and Edward J. Olah.
