Atty. Kathleen McGurrin

Atty. Kathleen L. McGurrin, 66, passed away suddenly of natural causes on May 26, 2021.

Born in Scranton, she was the beloved daughter of the late Atty. John R. Lenahan Sr. and Mary T. Lenahan. Her early life was spent surrounded by seven loving siblings and neighborhood friends in the Hill section of Scranton.

She was a 1972 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School in the first co-ed graduating class. Kathleen’s love of writing led her to graduate from Duquesne University with a degree in journalism. She then pursued professional school and obtained her Juris Doctor from Villanova University School of Law.

In 1979, Kathleen joined her father and two older brothers (two younger brothers subsequently joined) in the practice of law at Lenahan & Dempsey P.C. In short order, she became a highly accomplished personal injury attorney, specializing in workers’ compensation cases. Kathleen, one of the very few female attorneys with such experience at that time, possessed the highest level of skill needed in the Pennsylvania appellate courts to effectively brief and present many cases in the Commonwealth Court and the Supreme Court. A knowledgeable and popular public speaker, Kathleen lectured frequently at statewide legal seminars on various topics including the most effective manner to represent victims of personal injuries. In 1983, she earned an advanced certification in trial advocacy from Harvard Law School. It was often remarked by many, “No one works files more thoroughly than Kathleen.” Admitted to practice law in the states of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, she ultimately retired from law practice to raise her family.

Kathleen will be remembered for her intelligence, generosity and sharp wit. She will be greatly missed by her family who knew her to be a willing and compassionate listener who could be counted on to provide insightful, invaluable advice.

Kathleen is survived by Dr. Timothy P. McGurrin Sr., to whom she was married 35 years and together raised four wonderful sons, J. Taggart McGurrin, JD, CPA, MBA, Summit, N.J.; Timothy P. McGurrin Jr., JD, MBA, Princeton, N.J.; T. Keller McGurrin, MBA and a student at Villanova University School of Law; and Tarquin L. McGurrin, MBA, who will enter Villanova University School of Law in September; her siblings, Atty. John R. Lenahan Jr., Honorable Judge Mary L. Amrhein, Atty. Joseph P. Lenahan, Atty. Timothy G. Lenahan, Atty. Sheila S. Cunningham, Dr. Terrence P. Lenahan and Atty. Brian J. Lenahan; as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

All will miss her dearly and will forever cherish her unfailing, profound love and affection as well as the wonderful counsel and support she continually provided. Each of her sons will now be tasked with carrying the torch to make “world-famous” brownies and other delicious baked goods for the family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory’s Church, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green. Interment will be private at St. Catherine’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sepsis Alliance, 3180 University Avenue, Suite 235, San Diego, CA 92104, www.sepsis.org.

Kathleen’s care has been entrusted to Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
