Rebecca Haggerty

Rebecca (Dennis) Haggerty, 49, of South Abington Twp., died Friday at Allied Services Hospice Center after enduring a long struggle with brain cancer. Her loving husband, Daniel, was by her side.

Born May 3, 1968 in Evansville, Ind., Rebecca was the daughter of Martin Dennis and Duane Jackson. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's University (Philadelphia), where she also met her husband, Dan.  It was love at first sight. She went on to earn master's degrees from Villanova University and the University of Scranton.

Rebecca worked as Assistant Dean for Assessment and Programs for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Scranton, where she also taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in business and ethics. More than this, though, Rebecca found great joy being involved in the lives of so many students at the University. Many students lovingly referred to her as their "Scranton Mom." Rebecca gave freely of herself to many people and organizations, including Marley's Mission, where she devoted eight years of her beautiful life.

Rebecca loved to laugh. She also loved to read, pray, ride bikes, relax on the beach, and, more than anything else, be with her three wonderful daughters, ZoA, Charlotte, and Lilly Jane.

She was a parishioner of the Church of St. Gregory. Her faith was unshakeable. During eleven months of illness she prayed religiously with her dear friend Tracy Tully for the intentions of many, many other people, some of whom she never even met.

In addition to her husband and daughters, Rebecca is survived by her mother, Duane Farley (Sam Freeman); father, Martin Dennis (Barbara Lesco); sisters, Christina Kominoth (Dustin) and Sarah Dennis; stepsisters, Nancy Thrush (Bill) and Kalah Woerner (Bob); niece, Nola; nephew, Aidan; the Jacksons of Arkansas; and countless other friends and family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John Lapera on Wednesday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Gregory. All are welcome. The family will also receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, April 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Church of St. Gregory. Interment will take place in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly Twp.

Memorial contributions in Rebecca's name may be made to Marley's Mission, www.marleysmission.com.
