Born July 30, 1931, Pauline was the youngest daughter of John P. and Florence W. Bartleman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willard T. Heckman, and all of her siblings: Betty Miller, Jack Bartleman, Mary Ann Frederick, and Tommy Bartleman, as well as her son-in-law, Mark Pavlock.
She is survived by her children: David Heckman (Robin), Catherine Pavlock, Judith Linder (Brick), and Lisa Heckman; her grandchildren: Bryan Heckman (Kate), Megan Martino (Brian), Stephen Pavlock, Julie Heckman, Samantha Jescovitch (Ryan), and Nicole Hill (Chris); as well as her great grandchildren: Owen, Grady, and Quinn Jescovitch, Oliver Pavlock, Eli Martino, and Evelyn Heckman; and also, many nieces and nephews.
Her early education in a two-room schoolhouse (walking up hill through snow both ways!) led her to be the first in her family to go to college. She graduated from West Chester College with a secondary education degree in math. Following college, she went to Turkey as a missionary and taught in an English language school for a year. Pauline came back to the States to marry Willard, whom she had missed desperately. They settled in Arlington, VA. He worked in military intelligence while she taught math; their first child was born there. Soon after they moved to Bucks County, PA, where their three daughters were born. Later they moved to the Abingtons and she returned to teaching at the high school, transferring to the middle school when it opened. Over decades of teaching, she impacted hundreds and hundreds of students.
Her faith was a vital element of her life and she was active in church every place she lived. She taught Bible studies and Sunday School and led prayer groups. She started the Ugly Quilts for the Homeless ministry at First Presbyterian Church, where she was also an elder and deacon. Pauline served on multiple pastor nominating committees and co-chaired a capital campaign for the church. A longtime supporter of the Abington Community Library, she was auctioneer for the children's auction for many years.
Pauline loved playing games...ruthlessly! Though doing everything in her life in a great hurry, she showed exceptional patience teaching all her grandkids to play, but she certainly didn't cut them any slack! Pauline loved quilting, reading, and going for walks, especially on the beach. She was passionate for ice cream and was known to wake up in the middle of the night, shuffle out to the kitchen for a bowl, then silently return to bed without speaking to anyone.
She believed her greatest accomplishment was creating a pleasing home for her husband and making him happy. She missed him terribly following his death in 2006.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 300 School Street, Clarks Summit, PA, on Sunday, July 19, 2026, with visitation at 1:00 pm followed by the service 2:00 pm. A private family committal service will be held at a later date at Carversville Cemetery.
