Margaret (Moran) McGurl, 97, Clarks Summit, died Saturday, at Abington Manor. She was the widow of the late James Gerald McGurl, who died Sept. 19, 2003. The couple was married more than 48 years.
Born Nov. 25, 1919, in Chinchilla, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Kathryn (McDonnell) Moran.
A Clarks Summit resident since 1953, having moved from Chinchilla, she was a 1938 graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Before retiring in 1993, she was a cosmetic associate for more than 20 years, employed by the J.C. Penney Co. at the Viewmont Mall.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish, Clarks Summit, and a former member of its Women's Guild. She and her family were active volunteers for the organizing years of the parish. She volunteered at Our Lady of Peace School in the cafeteria as a hot-lunch mother and volunteered in the library.
Surviving are a son, James G. McGurl Jr. and wife, Tina, Clarks Summit; a sister, Cleo Oakes, Newcastle, Del.; a brother, Paul Moran, Springville, N.Y.; and a grandson, James G. McGurl III, Clarks Summit.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Kathleen (Kay) Jordan, Eleanor Mattimore and Mary Surgalla; and two brothers, Joseph Moran and Jack Moran.
The funeral will be Thursday from Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with Mass at 10 a.m. to be celebrated by Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Service Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit.
