Lawrence “Larry” John Mayer, 81, a longtime resident of Scranton and most recently, Chapin, South Carolina, died Tuesday, peacefully at home. He was the husband of Pamela (Conway) Mayer.
Born December 24, 1943 in Scranton, Lawrence was the son of the late Lawrence John and Agnes (Morahan) Mayer. Larry proudly served his country in the US Army Reserves for six years.
Larry attended the University of Scranton Evening College, Business School. Larry’s first career was as a nationally recognized salesman for both Nestle Corporation and American Cyanamid, Breck Division. Larry attended Empire Beauty School and had both his operator’s and manager’s licenses. He and his wife, Pamela, owned and operated four beauty salons in Lackawanna County for forty years. The salons were named Sharpcuts and Hairworks where he enjoyed engaging with customers and providing the best salon experience.
His hobbies included working in the yard with flowers and vegetables. Larry truly enjoyed making Italian pastas and pizza from scratch.
Larry enjoyed his family the most. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Pamela Mayer; daughter Heather Mayer, Esq.; granddaughter, Doriana Delizio; nephews, Dominick (Chris) Stivila; David, Robert, James Mayer; Sean (Elizabeth Esq.) Devine M.D.; Kevin (Beverly) Conway; Sunev (Lucia) Conway, nieces, Debbie (Ernie) Schwink; Susie Wilson; Mary (Dave) Latanision; Gina (Mike) Keppick; Jackie (Jeff) Marsico; Linda, Leslie, Kathy Pallion, Marissa Conway (Matthew) Langan, Kira Coviello (Noah) Sullum; Jaclene (Brad) Smith, and many great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Kevin (Lisa) Conway and sister-in-law Aleta Conway.
He is preceded in death by his siblings, Wallace, Edward, Matthew Mayer, Joan Pallion and Jean Stivila; nephew, Eddie Mayer and niece, Jean Marie Pallion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Ann’s Basilica of Scranton. The funeral will be on Friday, November 14 at 11am at St. Ann's Basilica, 1233 St Ann St, Scranton with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated. Interment to follow with Military honors at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
