Josephine M.
Mahon
April 12, 1936 – March 4, 2026
On March 4th, Our beloved Mother and devoted “Mom Mom” Josephine Mahon left us. She was born in the Bull’s Head section of Scranton on April 12 1936 to Mary Russo Costanzo and Joseph Costanzo. She was tremendously proud of her Italian heritage. Many of her best memories were of Bull’s Head in North Scranton and being surrounded by her large Italian family, many of whom lived within a few blocks. In later years, Jo and her husband Paul moved to Clarks Green where they once again created many wonderful neighborhood memories and made lifelong friends.
Jo was the wife of Paul Mahon who passed away on March 8, 2016. They were married for 57 years. Jo was a devoted wife who unselfishly cared for her husband during a lengthy illness. When he was unable to work, Jo began her career as a devoted employee of the Scranton School District. She touched the lives of many special needs students during her 38 year career. During that time she was blessed with many life long friends and wonderful colleagues.
Perhaps Jo was best known for her sense of style. An absolutely beautiful woman inside and out. She took great pride in her home and her appearance. She would spend countless hours decorating for Christmas and sharing her home with friends and family for Christmas Eve. She always dressed impeccably and was stylish to the end. She loved to shop and spend time with friends and family.
Jo was a devoted mother and Mom Mom. She made a wonderful home for her children and taught them kindness and the importance of family. We were always sure her children were her greatest passion until her three grandsons were born. Her love and devotion to them was unsurpassed. She would cook for them, cheer for them turn a blind eye for them whatever they needed. Truly their biggest cheerleader. One of her life’s greatest blessings was to see them become husbands and fathers. Her pride in them knew no bounds until they had children. Once again she grew in love. Her 6 great grandchildren brought her such joy in her later years. Her room was covered with their photos and she would light up when they would visit.
Jo is survived by her daughter Mary Ellen Conaboy and her husband Attorney Bill, her son Michael and his husband Brad White and was predeceased by her son Paul. She was blessed with three grandsons Attorney Bill Conaboy and wife Dr. Rachael (Peters), Attorney Andrew Conaboy and wife Laura (Sharkey), and Attorney Jordan Conaboy and wife Dr. Samantha Kelly Conaboy. Her beloved grandchildren are Jack, Warren and Marion (MiMi) Conaboy, Philadelphia. Nola and Leo Conaboy, Sarasota Florida and Paulmer Conaboy, Clarks Summit. She was predeceased by her sister Rose Shoener and her husband Roy, her sister Carmella and her husband Ray and her brother Pasquale “Pat”Yanni. She is survived by her sister in law Palma Yanni. She was blessed with many nieces and nephews whom she adored.
A most heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Allied Terrace, Allied Services Transitional Unit and Rehabilitation Hospital, and Allied Services Scranton Hospice Unit, Dr. Richard Weinberger and the Sinclair Agency. She was cared for like family and we are most grateful. She loved being part of the Terrace community for 8 years.
As were her wishes, there were no public services. She will be remembered this summer with a celebration of her life at Lake Winola where she shared in so many family memories. Arrangements were made by Jennings Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services. Donations can be made in Josephine’s name to Allied Terrace 100 Terrace Lane Scranton, Pa. 18508.
