Joseph Gerard Hogan passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of family and dear friends on Tuesday, May 19.
Joe was born in West Scranton and was the only son of the late Gerald Hogan and Ruth (Stull) Hogan. He was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School and received a BS in European History from the University of Scranton. He furthered his education with a Masters of Science in Special Education from Marywood College as well as a Supervisor's in Special Education. He was a dedicated educator, working at the Luzerne Intermediate Unit and retired from the Scranton School District after 35 years as a teacher, diagnostician, supervisor, and remedial reading specialist. After retirement he worked at Keystone College in the education department. Joe was an honorable man, a true gentleman of faith, great intellect, humor, patience, and kindness.
Joe was married for 52 years to Danelle Iammangini Hogan. Their union was blessed with one son, Nicholas, of New Haven, CT. He was an amazing husband and father, never wavering in his love and support, creating a strong family environment filled with tradition and joy.
He was a faithful member of the Church of St. Gregory where he served on parish council, was a member of the choir and an eager volunteer.
Surviving in addition to his wife and son, are a sister-in-law, Annmarie Panzara, nephews, Dr. Luciano Picchio and his wife Jessica, Marialana Picchio and partner Denise Gillespie, Dr. Michael Panzara and wife Dr. Emanuela Gussoni, Lorianne Griswold and husband, Mark, Attorney Chloe Picchio, great nieces and nephews, Francesca Panzara, Douglas Griswold, Sophia Griswold, godchildren Maura King Zagorski and husband Bryan, Molly McNulty, Eric Hoffman and their families, and several cousins.
A special thanks to friends, neighbors, and colleagues who were family of his heart and supported him and his family through his illness. Special thanks to Tina Williams who gave him special comfort and care, the staff of Compass Home Health and visiting angels, Dr. Raham Alam and Dr. Joshua Richter of Mr. Sinai, NY, the staff at Geisinger Cancer Center, and Allied Services Hospice Center.
The funeral will be on Friday at 11am at the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9-10:45am at the church
