John Joseph Rafferty Jr., 57, Lancaster, Calif., died Friday, January 25, 2013 upon arrival at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He and his fianceI�e, Anna Cortez, traveled to the Scranton area for his stepfather's funeral which was Friday.
Born April 6, 1955, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Kathleen Duffy Rafferty Boczniewicz and the late John Joseph Sr. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and Antelope Valley Community College, where he received his licensed practical nursing certification. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Enterprise and received the National Defense Service Medal.
He was employed by California Correctional Facilities as a correctional officer and was a licensed practical nurse.
John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, target-shooting and motorbiking. He also enjoyed playing golf and was known to play the drums. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children and fianceI�e, Anna.
Surviving are a son, Shaun P. Lancaster, California; three daughters, Meghan Shibley, Austin, Texas; Michelle and Maggie Rafferty, Palmdale, Calif.; two sisters, Deborah Ann Churmblo, Clarks Summit; and Catherine "Cat" Fraser, Dalton; his fianceI�e, Anna Cortez; aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
The funeral with military honors will be Friday at 11 a.m. from Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, with services by Monsignor James J. McGarry. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly Twp.
