John F. Radkiewicz Sr., 89, of South Abington Twp., passed away Monday after a brief illness. Born February 25, 1936, he was the son of the late Felix and Margaret (Staskewitz) Radkiewicz. He is survived by his wife of nearly 35 years, the former Cheryl Sempa.
John was a proud member of the 1954 class of Clarks Summit High School, where he was a member of the football team. He was a graduate of Penn State University, University Park, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture.
Following a successful career in municipal planning, zoning, and landscape architecture, he was the owner of Floral Haven Greenhouses. He also served as Director of Lackawanna County Planning Commission.
He served on the boards of the Abington Community Library, Advisory Board of Penn State Worthington Campus, Abington Heights School District Middles States Evaluation Team, South Abington Sewer Authority and the South Abington Township Planning Commission.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Susan Dorsey (Jeff), Elaine Rosencrance (Clyde), John Radkiewicz Jr., Thomas Radkiewicz (Kathleen) and Margaret Hurd (Tom); grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandson, nieces and nephews; sister, Helen De Rigge (Len), and Margaret Webster (Billy) and his loving cats, Dixie and Willow. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Radkiewicz, and his former wife, Elaine Williams Radkiewicz Bistocchi.
The funeral will take place on Thursday at 10am at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State Street, Clarks Summit., with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by Msgr. John J. Sempa, John's brother-in-law. Interment, St. Mary's Byzantine Cemetery, Minooka.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 30 Ed Preate Dr Suite 108, Moosic, PA 18507, or Social Concerns of Corpus Christi Parish, 605 Luzerne Ave, West Pittston, PA 18643.
