John Macheska

John H. Macheska Jr., 87, Clarks Summit, formerly of Ransom Twp., died Sunday at Abington Manor, South Abington Twp. His wife of 46 years, the former Margaret Savka, died Nov. 17, 1997.

Born Nov. 4, 1927, in the family home in Ransom, he was the son of the late John Sr. and Stella Phillips Macheska. A lifelong resident of Ransom Twp., he was a graduate of Newton Ransom High School. He operated the family farm with his wife until her passing. He formerly was a truck driver for PennDOT and later was employed for more than 20 years by Akzo Salt Co., Clarks Summit, in the maintenance department. He was a member of the co-operative Farmers Market, Scranton.

He enjoyed wintering in Hawaiian Isle, Ruskin, Florida, with his wife and later himself. A hardworking man, he enjoyed farming and the good times with his family.

His family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude for the quality care provided by the staff at Abington Manor and the caregivers of Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna M. Addis and husband, Ron, Clarks Summit; and Jaclyn M. Fletcher and husband, Evan, Long Boat Key, Fla.; a son, Michael Macheska, Ransom; a brother, Thomas and wife, Madeline, Ransom; a sister, Marie Kapp and husband, Karl, all of Ransom; companion and friend, Shirley Wescott, Dalton; four granddaughters, Sarah Checho and husband, Jesse; Jennifer Ritzco and husband, John, all of Jessup; Danielle Wolbers and husband, Chris, Clarks Summit; and Patti Munson and husband, Mark, Moosic; a grandson, Michael Macheska and wife, Amy, Dover, Del.; great-grandchildren, Josephine Checho, Lucy and Maggie Ritzco, Lilyana Macheska, Hannah and Allan Buckland, Shayla Harris and Mark Munson; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter Macheska.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. by the Rev. William Boekestein, pastor, Covenant Reformed Church, Carbondale, at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit. Interment, private, Abington Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Newton Ransom Fire Company, 1890 Newton-Ransom Blvd., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
