Irene Frances Vertucci, 93, Clarks Summit, formerly of Pocono Lake, PA and Parsippany, NJ, died peacefully Thursday, at Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab, Scranton. She was happily married for 62 years to the late Louis “Lou” Martin Vertucci, who previously died in December 2021.
Born October 15, 1931 in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of the late Erich and Mary Ellen (Smythe) Subklewe. She graduated from Immaculata High School as salutatorian. While raising her family, she had several part-time jobs over the years, and worked for the Morris County Library in New Jersey as their head of circulation for 10 years.
Irene was always proud to mention growing up in NYC at “33rd and 3rd “. She loved being with family and friends and having deep, meaningful conversations, and insisted on serving a ‘nice cup of tea.’ She enjoyed anything history-related and watching English comedy shows. She was known to watch classic movies. Irene loved to read and do crossword puzzles, especially the Sunday New York Times puzzle. She was a talented artist, still drawing and painting until recently. Lou affectionately called her ‘Bubby’ and they were well-traveled, having been to Ireland, England, Italy in addition to taking many trips to Maine and out west. Irene was also fond of playing slots at the casinos. She loved finding a good bargain and was always refinishing something in the house. She served in a supportive role, had concern for others and was compassionate with taking care of a developmentally-disabled niece, Paige Barbara Garretson, aka ‘Chickie’, until her death in 2016. She enjoyed collecting dolls, Native American statues and Civil War artifacts. Irene also loved her morning coffee and donut, if it wasn’t a waffle. She was endearing and loved by her caregivers, being easy-going with an Irish-whisper. She leaves behind a legacy of love, care and devotion to her family.
Surviving are three sons: Michael, of Netcong, NJ; Mark and his wife, Cynthia, of Lewes, DE; Matthew and his wife, Shayla, of Bloomsburg, PA; two daughters: Mary Mangino and her husband, John Mangino of Covington Twp., PA; Marissa Moguin and her husband, Mark Moguin, of Denville, NJ; nine grandchildren: Nicole Klein (Robert), Dominick Severino, Roseanne Alvarado (Luis), Joseph Severino, Jacqueline Greco (Michael), Samantha La (Michael), Rachel Vertucci (Eric Belles), Rebecca Vertucci, and James Moguin; three great grandchildren: Anthony and Nicholas Klein, and Theo La; and numerous nieces and nephews.
