Gina Maria Carlo, D.P.M., 56, Waverly, died Sunday with her loving family at her bedside in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Facility, Dunmore. Born Nov. 7, 1958, in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Robert Silvestri and Jacqueline (Cerminaro) Carlo and stepdaughter of the late Theodore Carlo.She was a 1976 graduate Carbondale Area High School, and received her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Scranton. She was formerly a chemist for McNeil Pharmaceuticals, New Jersey. She continued her studies, and earned her doctorate from Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, Temple University, with high honors magna cum laude in 1988.She had a podiatrist practice in Carbondale and previously Scranton. She was a member of the American Podiatric Association and the PA Podiatric Association. A member of Church of St. Gregory, Clarks Green, she was active in organizations with her children.Gina was a special caring person who idolized her children. Her healing hands helped many with her spirit, values and way of life was shared. Her devotion to health and nature led her to become an avid runner, having run in numerous marathons. Her enthusiasm for running continued while fighting breast cancer, always being thankful for the nature around her. She was fond of animals, especially her dog, Maddie. A sports fan, she was a diehard New York Yankees fan. She was a devoted animal rescuer, having adopted numerous pets and providing a wonderful home.A special moment was being honored by Blue Cross of NEPA Breast Cancer Honored Gallery of Hope. The family wishes to sincerely express its appreciation to all who cared for Gina.Also surviving a daughter, Jennifer N. Horne, a freshman at West Chester University; a son, Christopher Horne, a senior at Abington Heights High School; a sister, Alicia Bird and husband, Robert, Richmondale; her fianceI�, attorney Edward G. Krowiak, Clarks Green; aunts, uncles and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, to be celebrated by the Rev. John M. Lapera, pastor. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.Memorial contributions may be made to Gina's children education fund, Horne Children's Education Fund, c/o NBT Bank, 318 E. Grove St., Clarks Green, PA 18411, or Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
