Florence E.
Allen
Jul 27, 1934 — Oct 18, 2026
Florence "Flo" Elizabeth Allen (Megivern) peacefully went to her final rest on October 18, 2026, after 92 years of an eventful and full life. She was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend and she will be missed and remembered by many. She was preceded in death by her first husband James Albert Smith (May 10, 1990) and by her second husband Jack Ellis Allen (January 7, 2017). She is survived by her five children: James, Jr. (Charity), Debra Errante (Ron), Sherry, Randy (Sandra), and Kelly; nine grandchildren: Alaina (Pol) & Allan Smith, Ronnie & Michael Errante, Heidi Phillips, Brandon McGivern & Taylor Smith, Logan Smith, and Kacey & Nicole (Hagan) Olver, and eight great-grandchildren. Flo was able to meet her newest great-grandchild, Daisy Hagan, just a few months ago.
Flo was born on July 27, 1934, to Eugene and Julia (Paynter) Megivern at her grandparents' house in Dyberry Township, Wayne County. She grew up nearby on the family farm and went to school through 8th grade at the Beers School House, a one room schoolhouse that still stands today at the corner of PA-670 and Kilroe Road. When it was time for high school she moved into Honesdale and lived with her grandmother, Elizabeth Paynter (Farrell), so she could attend Honesdale Catholic High School, graduating in 1952. She married James Smith later that year on October 11, 1952, followed by a honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls.
In addition to raising a family, Flo worked as a telephone switchboard operator, Tupperware salesperson, McDonald's manager, and a small business owner alongside her husband of Jungle Jim's Campground in Dyberry Township. It wasn't all work for Flo - she was also an avid motorcyclist and would run #48 in powder puff stock car races at Beach Lake Raceway. Jim & Flo were key members of the Pleasure Riders motorcycle club of Honesdale. She was even crowned Miss National Laconia Tour Queen at the Laconia Bike Week in 1963.
As they neared retirement, Jim & Flo started spending the winters in Fort Myers, Florida. After selling the campground and Jim's untimely death in 1990, Flo eventually moved to Florida full time. Besides making a new group of friends, Flo's passions were working at the St. Columbkille Thrift Store and running the penny social at the park where she lived. Florida is also where Flo met her second husband, Jack. They married on May 11, 2002, and enjoyed almost 15 years of love and companionship till Jack's passing in 2017. Flo continued to live in Florida, making it through a close call with Hurricane Charley in 2004, but the devastation of Hurricane Ian in 2024 was too much, so she moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to family in Clarks Summit where she eventually passed away.
From milking cows to riding motorcycles to nurturing generations of family, Flo lived every one of her 92 years with an unstoppable spirit, a generous heart, and a deep love for the people and places she called home. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.
