Ellen Walsh entered eternal life on November 28. Born in Scranton on October 21, 1951, she was the daughter of the late James and Helen Gibbons Walsh.
Ellen was a graduate of Marywood Seminary and Chestnut Hill College. After graduation from Chestnut Hill, she moved to New York City with two college roommates to begin their careers. Ellen’s first job was as the Executive Assistant to the Vice President of the Hearst Corporation, a global media company, a position that introduced her to the exciting world of publishing, marketing and advertising. She continued in that field enjoying a successful career as an Account Executive at the worldwide advertising network BBDO, managing such high-profile clients as Gillette, GE and DuPont.
Over the years Ellen mastered all the little survival strategies of Manhattan, becoming a thoroughly internalized New Yorker. She loved fashion, decorating, art museums, and above all else, Broadway—her bound collection of theater Playbills lined her bookshelves as fond reminders of her passionate pursuit.
Ellen’s greatest joy of all was raising her beloved son, Matthew. How they loved one another and looked after each other was beautiful to behold. A true Scrantonian, Ellen was an entertaining storyteller, with a wonderful sense of humor. She was a woman with a gift for friendship, one who loved nurturing them with long telephone conversations. Her family knew her as the most thoughtful giver of gifts, perfectly selected, artfully wrapped and greatly appreciated. She faced life’s challenges with strength, grace and abiding faith, always. Ellen came home to Scranton for the last year of her life, living happily with her sister Ann in Taylor. She was grounded in gratitude, relished the company of old friends and thrived in the embrace of her joyful extended family.
She is survived by her son, Matthew Taschetti, Spring Hill FL, brother John A. (Ellen), Naples FL, sister Ann Walsh IHM, Taylor, niece Emily Holland (Kelly), Boston MA, nephew James (Carina), Brooklyn NY, great nephews Hunter and Liam Holland, and great niece Neve Jean Walsh, stepchildren Jill, Melissa and Jamie Taschetti and many beloved cousins. Ellen was preceded in death by her brother Jimmy Walsh.
Funeral services will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Friends of the Poor & Catherine McAuley Center, 430 Pittston Ave. Scranton, PA 18505 or https://fotpcmc.org/donation.
