Constance Gerber

Constance (Margalus) Gerber, a member of the greatest generation, died peacefully on Tuesday. She was the widow of William Nevin Gerber, who died Jan. 6, 2001. The couple had been married more than 53 years.

Born Nov. 6, 1925, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen P. (Miller) Margalus. She had lived in Clarks Summit, Trenton, N.J., Mountaintop and Elk Mountain. She was educated in Scranton public schools and never attended college, but had an excellent grasp of the English language, literature, the stock market and logical mathematics.

She had a great capacity for love and was very generous in sharing it. She was a patient teacher, natural nurturer and someone who was easy to be with. Connie was an avid gardener who could tell you the Latin name of many of the species in her garden. She was an excellent and enthusiastic bridge player.

Surviving are a son, W. Nevin Gerber and wife, Linda, Waverly; and two daughters, Helen McDonald and husband, Kevin, Mountaintop; and Jane Matthews and husband, Win, Elk Mountain. Connie had six beautiful grandchildren.

A celebration of Constance's life will be held Feb. 23 at Damenti's Restaurant, 870 North Hunter, Mountaintop, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The family will receive relatives and friends at this time. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Our Mother of Sorrow Cemetery, Finch Hill.

The family would like to thank J. Patel, her devoted and loving caregiver, the many kind people from Lutheran Care and Hospice St. John and the caring and compassionate staff of the Shepherds Unit, Providence Place, Drums.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , 63 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.

Arrangements are being made by Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Service Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
