Clayton “Sonny” Ceveister Sheffler Jr., 79, of Glenburn Township, died Monday at home. His wife of 50 years is the former Avelyn “Peggy” Greiner.
Born January 8, 1947, in Tunkhannock, he was the son of the late Clayton Sheffler Sr. and Madeline (Keithline) Sheffler.
He was a graduate of West Canada High School. He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 to 1971, during which time he completed two tours in Vietnam. Being a Marine and serving his country were two of Clayton’s proudest achievements, second only to his children and grandchildren.
Following his military service, Clayton spent many years working as a truck driver and owner-operator.
Also surviving are his children, Gwen Sheffler, (Jerry) State College; Sonya Sheffler, King George, VA; Crystal Cook and her husband, Scott, Poland, NY; Carrie Sheffler (Dave), Ransom Township; Clayton III and his wife, Katie, Commerce City, CO; and Misty Calvert (Stan), Scott Township.
He is also survived by six grandsons, Robert and Joseph Jones, Corey Cook, Parker Calvert, Clayton IV and Levi Sheffler; and three granddaughters, Rachael Zielenski, Lilia Calvert and Madelynn Calvert.
His surviving sibling is his sister, Betty Lynch. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sam, and three sisters, Althea Mirabelli, Shirley Riesel and Beverly Mower.
A celebration of Clayton’s life will be held Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Abington Memorial VFW Post #7069, 402 Winola Road, Clarks Summit, with military honors at 7 p.m. The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the VFW.
