William Butler, Sr

William F. Butler Sr., 88, of Dunmore, passed away Friday evening at the home of his daughter and son-in-law. His wife is Mary Grace Kilcullen Brier. His first wife, the late Grace Rafter Butler, passed away March 15, 1990, at their family home in Dunmore.

Bill was born in Scranton on Nov. 22, 1928, to the late Thomas J. and Winifred Sullivan Butler. He was a graduate of Central High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Army, where he served honorably and received multiple awards and decorations. Following his service in the Army, he attended the University of Scranton, earning his business degree. He then began his career as a sales representative with the Fells Naptha Soap Co. After his tenure with Fells Naptha, he began his venture as an independent food broker. He also served as the president of the Northeast Pennsylvania Association of Manufacturers Inc. In 1970, he opened Butler's Sunoco Service Station, Clarks Summit, which remains in operation by his two sons. In addition to owning and operating Butler's Sunoco, he partnered with his sons in owning and operating two area convenience stores.

He was a member of St. Paul's Church, Abington Memorial VFW Post 7069, Clarks Summit, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed many great times golfing and socializing with fellow members of Elmhurst Country Club.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan B. Kapp and husband, Dr. Dennis Kapp, Dunmore; two sons, William F. Jr. and wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Butler, Clarks Green; and Thomas J. and wife, Mary Elizabeth, Dunmore; son-in-law, Joseph Romanelli and wife, Kathleen, Walkersville, Md.; sisters-in-law, Virginia Butler, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Joan Phillips, Scranton; 13 grandchildren, Eileen Kapp Smith, and husband, Lee; Dr. Brian Kapp and wife, Jennifer; Timothy Kapp and Alla Willson; Alice Kapp; Kelly Butler; Megan Butler Zanghi and husband, Sandy; William Butler III and wife, Brittany; Casey Butler Roerden and husband, Brian; Thomas Butler; Molly Butler; Daniel Romanelli and wife, Marie; Grace Romanelli; Maria Romanelli.

He is also survived by his wife Mary Grace's seven sons, Timothy Brier and wife, Janet; Thomas Brier and wife, Terri; Patrick Brier and wife, Kate; Mark Brier and wife, Tammy; Robert Brier and wife, Anne; Daniel Brier and wife, Karen; and Frank Brier and wife, Claire. Also surviving are great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Molly Butler Romanelli; a brother, Thomas Butler; and a sister, Janet Butler Neurock.

The funeral will be Tuesday from St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. to be celebrated by the Rev. Donald J. Williams. Interment with full military honors, Cathedral Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Service Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit.
