Rose Shields

Rose Marie Landry Shields, 89, of Scranton, died Tuesday at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of William A. Shields, who died Dec. 7, 1967.

Born May 2, 1924, in Valenzuela, La., daughter of the late Paul John-Baptiste and Rosa M. PreJean Landry, Rose Marie lived her early years in Louisiana and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School, Plaquemine, La. She moved to Scranton in 1945, where she was a homemaker, caring for her family. Following the untimely death of her husband, she began working locally in the garment industry, having worked for Family Garment.

Rose Marie cherished her family and the happy times spent during their gatherings. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, taking long walks, trips to West Virginia and visiting her family and friends in Louisiana. She looked forward to her regular grocery trip with her son. A faithful woman, she prayed the rosary daily, a tradition that started as a child when her large household would gather every evening to pray the rosary as a family. Her gentleness and spirited nature will be sadly missed.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. and wife, Mary, Moscow; three daughters, Lynn Bentler and husband, John, Scranton; Deborah Lipnicki and husband, John, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Patricia Hannon and husband, William P., Greentown; a brother, Raymond "KayKay" Landry, Morgan City, La.; a sister, Lottie Mae Dupree, Thibodaux, La.; a grandson, Anthony Shields; six granddaughters, Renee Shields, Kerry Bentler, Christine Reese, Lily Hannon, Jennie Sulcoski and Megan Shea; great-grandchildren, Julia, Brayden and Jackson Shields, Corrina Weidow, Alexis Weidow and Seth Reese; nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Genevieve LeBoeuf, Sybil Newchurch, Shirley Rogers and Joan Patricia Landry; and four brothers, Achille "Ratti," Paul, James Vernon and Lloyd Landry.

The family would like to thank the incredible, dedicated, nurturing staff at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, including the nurses, aides, staff, administration and Dr. Boccagno for the wonderful care, attention and comfort they provided for Rose Marie.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Ave., Scranton, to be celebrated by Monsignor John Esseff. The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 at the cathedral. Interment will be at the convenience of the family, St. Joseph's Cemetery, Davis Street, Scranton.
