Robert Gerard Gilbert, 88, of Clarks Summit, died on Sunday, in Allied Services Hospice Center. He was the husband of Barbara (Ostrowski) Gilbert.
Born January 4, 1934 in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Anthony Sr., and Mary Gilbert. Robert attended Meade Street Grade School, Grant Street Junior High, G.A.R. High School, and graduated from King’s College. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Conway DDE507.
Robert was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Snows Church and was a founding member of the North Scranton Rotary Club with over 45 years of “Service Above Self”. He earned many Rotarian of the Year awards for his service. Robert also enjoyed fishing, travel, the Abington Senior Community Center, writing newsletters for the senior center and Rotary, crossword puzzles, and the Boston Red Sox.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two sons: Stephen Gilbert and Robert Gilbert, Jr., and wife Patricia; grandchildren: Blair Carrington and Grant Alexander; and sister, Carol Brady. .
He is preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Gilbert, Jr. and sister, Marion Godfrey.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at Our Lady of the Snows Parish 301 S. State Street, Clarks Summit, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. to be celebrated by Msgr. Michael J. Delaney, pastor. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 – 9:45am at the church. A private cremation will take place at Jennings-Calvey’s on site crematory and burial of cremated remains will take place on Wednesday at 11am with military honors at Clarks Green Cemetery.

Barbara and family, offering our deepest condolences for your loss. Growing up across the street from all of you are some of our fondest memories of Carol Drive. My Mom sends her prayers to Barbara and the boys. Mr. Gilbert was a fantastic man and wonderful human being always going above and beyond for friends and family and he will be deeply missed. Barbara and family, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Bob as I knew him. We worked together at North Scranton Band and Trust for many years. He's was a great guy. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
