Marjorie Black

Marjorie Davis Black, 90, formerly of Waverly, died Sunday at Allied Skilled Nursing Facility. Her loving husband and best friend of 54 years, Lewis E. Black, died April 2, 2000.

Born Nov. 15, 1924, in Olyphant, daughter of the late David G. and Evelyn (Whitbeck) Davis, she was a graduate of Waverly High School. She formerly was a buyer for the Scranton Dry Goods for several years. She was an active volunteer at the Waverly Community House, having served as chairperson of publicity for various committees. A member of the Waverly Women's Club and the Waverly United Methodist Church, she had served on the board of the Salvation Army and other organizations and charities. She was the recipient of the Rotary Club of the Abingtons' distinguished Four-Way-Test award for her outstanding and dedicated service for more than 30 years at the Comm. Marge has also been named Northeast Women of the Year, and received the J.C. Penny Award.

A gracious lady, Marge and her husband, Lew, were a big part of the community, and will be sadly missed.

Surviving are nephews, Robert Gow and wife, Katherine, Factoryville; Dale Gow and his wife, Ann, Lake Sheridan; and David Davis and his wife, Joan, Holiday, Fla.; nieces, Bonnie Gow Watson and her husband, Alvah, Brooktondale, N.Y.; Lynda Gow Nepa and husband, Jerry, Carbondale; and Betsy Davis Bender and her husband, James, Pottsville; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Gow Phillips; brothers, John, Paul and Ralph Davis; and nephews, Lee and Russell Gow.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Waverly United Methodist Church with services by the Rev. Brent Stouffer, pastor, Clarks Green United Methodist Church. Interment will be private at Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly.

The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit.
