Kathleen V. (Hyland) McGurrin, RN, Clarks Summit, died Monday in VNA Hospice Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center with family at her bedside. She was 90 years of age. Her husband of 34 years, John Francis McGurrin Sr., died October 24, 1987.Born June 29, 1924, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Bernard Vincent and Kathryn (Hayes) Hyland of West Scranton.Kitty was a graduate of St. Patrick's Elementary and High schools. After graduation from Lackawanna Business College and a short stint at the A & P Offices, she enrolled in the registered nursing program at St. Mary's School of Nursing, South Scranton. Upon graduation as a registered nurse, she worked at St. Mary's Hospital until it closed, at which time she continued her profession at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Kitty, and her close friend, Joan Kraky, provided excellent nursing care in the emergency room for many years. She served as nurse director of admissions during her final years at Mercy. Shortly after retirement from Mercy Hospital, she was thrilled to provide medical office services with two of her sons, Dr. John and Dr. Mark, at McGurrin Surgical Associates in Scranton. Kitty was a faithful member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish, Clarks Summit, since 1957 and supportive of its parish elementary school, Our Lady of Peace, where all five of her children matriculated. Passionate about nursing, she was proud her children followed her into the healthcare field.In retirement, Kitty remained active with her friends and was very involved with her children and grandchildren.Surviving are three sons, Timothy P., D.M.D. and wife, Atty. Kathleen Lenahan McGurrin, Clarks Summit; Mark A., M.D. and wife, Sabrina Plante McGurrin, M.D., Manlius, N.Y.; John F. Jr., M.D., Hummelstown; a daughter, Maureen K. O'Hara, R.N. and husband, Patrick F. O'Hara III, R.N., Scranton; a brother, Gerard J. Hyland of West Hartford, Conn. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, Taggart, Timothy Jr., Keller, Tarquin, Lauren, Mark, Emily, Meghan, Jack, Marielle and Daniel McGurrin, and Kaity and Maura O'Hara. Kitty is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Eileen McGurrin, B.S.N., M.S.N.; a brother, Bernard V. Hyland, M.D.; and three sisters, Mary M. Hyland, Romayne Redding and Jeanne Sanford; a niece, Kathleen Sanford; and a nephew, Robbie Sanford.The family wishes to thank Christine and Sarah of Caregivers America and the doctors and nursing staff of Geisinger Community Medical Center and VNA Hospice for their superb care and kindness.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Monsignor James J. McGarry, Saturday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit.
