Jean Merriman

Jean M. (McAndrew) Merriman, 89, South Abington Twp., died Thursday in Abington Manor. She and her husband of 67 years, Bob, celebrated their wedding anniversary Nov. 6.

Born Sept. 26, 1932, in Avoca, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Ann (Wanalista) McAndrew. Jean was the oldest of seven children.

She was educated in St. Mary's School and a graduate of St. John's High School, both of Pittston. She furthered her education at Misericordia University, Dallas. She formerly was a psychiatric nurses aide at Clarks Summit State Hospital. She was a devoted member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish, Clarks Summit, where she served as a lecturer and was proud to be one of the first female lecturers for the parish. She was active with the church's Women's Guild, and was an active volunteer at the annual Country Bazaar.

Jean was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and had lived in Washington, D.C., after college where she met her husband. They both were organizing volunteers having raised funds for the National Aeronautics and Space Museum. She was an instructor at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., where she taught meteorology.

An active volunteer in the community, she regularly volunteered with Meals on Wheels, assisted in helping migrant workers in our area, a dedicated volunteer for orphanages including ones in Romania, a member of My Brothers Keeper organization responsible for making sleeping bags for the homeless. A beautiful singer, she sang alto in several area choirs.

She was a nurturing loving mother, who gave her children a wonderful childhood and continued love through the years. The family would like to thank Jean's many caregivers over the years. Her gentleness and smile will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
