Helen Ann Mathias Smalley, 89, of Clarks Summit, died Saturday at Abington Manor. She was the widow of Norman L. Smalley, who died June 5, 1984. Born Feb. 17, 1925, in Clarks Summit in the family homestead, she was the daughter of the late J. Walter and Elsie Walker Mathias. She was educated in the Chinchilla Grade School and graduated from Clarks Summit High School.Helen had been a sewing machine operator employed by Smart Styles, Clarks Summit. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church, Clarks Summit, Clarks Summit Baptist Bible Church and the Amalgamated Local Union United Garment Workers. A community volunteer, she was honored for her numerous hours of volunteering at Allied Services. She had a great love for animals and was a dedicated volunteer at the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.A faithful woman, she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed crocheting and was an avid reader who enjoyed her nook for reading and became a master gamer.Surviving are a daughter, Helen E. Scarfo and husband, Patrick, Scranton; four grandchildren, Pat Scarfo and wife, Tammy, Clarks Summit; Scott Scarfo and wife, Maryann, Manassas, Va.; Chris Smalley, Scott Twp.; and Charlene Smalley, Scranton; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a son, Norman Walter Smalley; a brother, William L. Mathias; and a sister, Alberta Kriedler.The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Jennings Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, with services by Pastor Glenn Amos, pastor of the Heritage Baptist Church, Clarks Summit.
