Evelyn Longworth

Evelyn Gress Longworth, 83, of Waverly Twp., died Thursday in Commonwealth Hospice of NEPA in the inpatient unit. She was the wife of the late William P. Longworth Sr.

Born Jan. 27, 1930, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Julia Perrick Gress. Evie was a graduate of West Scranton High School. She, along with her late husband, owned and operated Chicken Plus Stores, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. She lived in the Abingtons more than 54 years, moving from Scranton in 1959. She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit, and was formerly active in activities involving her son.

Evie was devoted to her husband and son, Bill Jr., and she truly enjoyed her home. She exemplified gracious hospitality to all who visited her home with the open-door policy. Often seen gardening, she would share a smile and laughter with passers-by. She and her family and friends enjoyed extensive travel and their annual cruises.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care she received from the staff and professionals at Green Ridge Care Center and later for the compassionate care provided by Commonwealth Hospice of NEPA.

Surviving are a son, William P. Longworth Jr., Harrisburg; a sister, Joan Loftus and husband, Edward, Clarks Summit; nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her three loving sisters, Marion Gull, Olga McLaughlin and Elinor Charles; and four brothers, Myron, James, Elmer and Michael Gress.

The funeral will be Tuesday with Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment, Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly.

"God is for us a refuge and strength, a help that is readily to be found during distresses." (Psalms 46:1) My deepest condolences to the family on the loss of your loved one. And may the above words give you peace knowing that the Almighty God is with you to comfort and strengthen you through this difficult time.
