Eugene Roe, M.D.

Husband, father, friend, brother, doctor; he was all of these and more. Eugene Joseph Roe, M.D. left this earth on June 28, 2021, his wife of 67 years, Anne Casey Roe at his side. Born in Olyphant, Pennsylvania on Jan. 18, 1930, to the late Samuel Roe and Teresa Walsh Roe, he leaves his sister, Mary Lou Burke; and a very large clan; children, Paula Roe-Prior and husband, Jack Prior; Eugene Joseph Roe Jr. and his wife, Mary Cullen Roe; Janet Murray and husband, Joe; Christopher Roe and wife, Joanie Gardier Roe; Thomas Roe and wife, Liz Kelley Roe; Marie Hanlon and husband, Michael, and he joins his son, Mark, who died on May 11, 2019. His beloved family also includes 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was proud of his family and their many accomplishments.
Dad was a remarkable man. Energetic, curious, well-read, witty, charming, handsome, as well as a self-professed marble and yo-yo champion. Despite all these gifts, he was a humble man of faith, devoted to his wife, his family and his profession.
A graduate of the University of Scranton and Temple Medical School, Dad established a family practice in Olyphant after serving in the United States Navy. He was a dedicated doctor, who cared deeply for his patients and greatly enjoyed mentoring and teaching the residents of the Scranton Temple-Residency Program (STRP). His excellence in teaching was recognized when he was chosen for the Bost award in 1984, and his service to STRP was recognized with the Founder’s award in 1997. In 1969, Dad was appointed director of the Department of Family Practice and served as the president of the Mercy Hospital staff from 1975-77. Retiring after 35 years in private practice, and unable to sit still, he spent the next five years as medical affairs director at Mercy Hospital.
He donated his time and medical talents to the Holy Family residents for many years. He sat on the boards of Mercy Hospital and Telespond and was a member, editor and president for the Lackawanna County Medical Society.
Mom and Dad were members of the Scranton Country Club from 1962 to the present. He enjoyed photography and traveling — as evidenced by photos of Mom from all over the globe. Dad loved a good party, enjoyed the social side of golf, skiing at Elk Mountain, and was master extraordinaire of The New York Times crossword puzzle.
Special thanks to the nurses of Regional Hospital and Dr. Anees Fogley for their exceptional care.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Church of St. Gregory, 330 North Abington Road, Clarks Green, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by the Rev. John M. Lapera, pastor. Interment will be private in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Olyphant, Pa. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

I will always remember Dr. Roe. He was our family dr when we lived in Olyphant. He came to our house several times when my dad and brother were very sick. A wonderful and caring doctor. He was a blessing to all. May he rest in the arms of Jesus.

Our hearts go out to Anne and her beautiful family on the loss of one of earth's most wonderful gifts.  We were very fortunate to have Dr. Roe take care of us and our three children for many years. He truly was a "family" doctor.  He care was excellent and just being in his company, made one feel better instantly. His brilliance and kindness as a physician were stellar. His quiet sense of humor was a sense of comfort. We never left his office ( no matter what the circumstances) without feeling totally cared for.  We wish you peace and consolation as you navigate without this very special person.

I met Dr. Roe when he saved my life after a terrible car accident. I never left him after that and he delivered my 3 children. A wonderful man who had me bring my nephew to his home for care after a dog bite. He and his beloved wife were and are great human beings. He will be greatly missed.

I was only 16 years old when I met Dr. Roe. He took care of me and my three children until 1980 when I moved to Texas. A wonderful doctor and a caring, compassionate human being who put his patients first. So sorry for your loss. God's blessings on his family and loved ones.

Dr. Roe was a kind, gentle man who provided honest and loving care to his patients.  We were lucky to have him as a family doctor.  I can see his tall frame, seemingly made intentionally smaller.  He literally made himself more approachable to his patients.  I am so very sorry for your loss and so honored that he cared for me, my children and my family. Wishing you peace.

We are so very sorry to hear of Dr Roe’s passing. Sending thoughts and prayers to the entire family. Now he’s joyfully reunited with Mark and hopefully meets up with his cousin, my Dad, Buddy Condel!

To the Roe family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Dr. Roe delivered two of my three children.  He was the nicest man that anyone could know.  He always had a smile whenever he met you.  I will never forget him and he will be missed.
