Dominic Monetta, Ph.D.
Dominic J. Monetta, 79, longtime resident of Washington, D.C., passed away at Sibley Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021.
Born in the Bronx, New York, he was the son of the late Joseph Anthony and the late Anna M. (Scalfani) Monetta. He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School, Bronx, N.Y., and received his Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Manhattan College. He received graduate degrees from the George Washington University and the University of Southern California, where he earned his Doctorate of Public Administration.
Dr. Monetta held senior executive positions with the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Energy. Following his federal government service, he served as the founder and president of Resource Alternatives Inc., a strategic analysis consulting firm. Additionally, he served on the boards of Hudson Technologies Inc., the Center for Security Policy, the PAM Institute, and the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation. He also served on the George Washington University Board of Advisors, where he was an adjunct professor of engineering management. He was a proponent of quality management and employee involvement, and an early advocate for alternative fuels and hydrogen technologies. He was the author of three books and numerous research articles.
Dom was fiercely loyal. His steady guidance and quick wit, coupled with his rapid-fire speech, endeared him to many. He was fond of reminding his family and friends to put first things first (“optimize the objective function”) and to focus on priority, not time management (“You always have enough time for your #1 priority.”). He was a leader, educator, confidant, advisor, dear friend and mentor to many, and he will be missed.
Surviving are his sons, Christopher (Kathy), Gainesville, Va., and Michael, Amissville, Va.; grandson, Nicholas; granddaughter, Halie; and brother, Joseph, North Abington Twp.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. at Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly.
Memorial contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 4200 Harewood Road NE, Washington, DC 20017.
