Brother John Patrick Calvey, TOR

Brother John Patrick Calvey, T.O.R., 76, member of the Third Order Regular Franciscans, Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, died on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at Saint Francis Friary at Mount Assisi in Loretto after a brief illness.

Born on April 28, 1944, in Scranton, he was the son of the late John Jennings and Kathryne (Dailey) Calvey. Brother John Patrick entered the Third Order Regular in August of 1989 at Mt. Assisi Friary in Loretto. At the end of his novitiate year he professed first vows on June 1, 1991, and later professed Solemn Vows on July 1, 1995.

Before entering the Franciscan Community, he was a teacher for 20 years at Valley Central High School in Montgomery, N.Y. He served in parishes as pastoral assistant at Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Hillsboro, Texas, and Sacred Heart Parish in Bradenton, Fla. Also he had served on the staff of the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio and was a member of the faculty of Bishop Egan High School and Conwell-Egan Catholic High School in Fairless Hills. Brother John Patrick also served as Local Econome of Saint Francis Friary Loretto, and Holy Spirit Friary in Ohio.

A graduate of Holy Rosary High School, Scranton, he studied at the University of Scranton in Scranton and received his bachelor's in English education and did graduate studies at Clare College and Oxford in England. He also studied at Washington Theological Union in Silver Spring, Md.

Devoted to his faith, an educationalist by nature, he instilled the values of faith. While in his terminally ill state, he never stopped giving advice, support and love to others. John's mother and father were very proud of his many accomplishments. A loving and caring brother to each of his siblings, he was willing to share and to give to each one but with the occasional stern reminder of his kindness. His unique manner will be sadly missed.

Brother John Patrick was the eldest of six children and is survived by two sisters, Mary C. Port, Fort Myers, Fla., and Kathleen (Paul) McLaine, Easton; three brothers, Francis (Joanne), Whitney Point, N.Y., Joseph (Linda), Binghamton, N.Y., and Christopher (Sharon), Clarks Summit; an uncle, Patrick A. Calvey Jr., Clarks Green; nieces and nephews, cousins and his Franciscan Community.

Preceded in death by a nephew, Matthew Calvey and brother-in-law, Jerry T. Port.

Friends will be received at the Chapel of St. Francis Friary at Mount Assisi, Loretto, on Monday at 4 p.m. until the vigil service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Friary at Mount Assisi, Loretto, with the Very Rev. Joseph Lehman, T.O.R., as principal celebrant. Following the Mass, interment will take place at the Franciscan Friars Cemetery on the campus of St. Francis University, Loretto.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral service will be restricted to the Franciscan Community and immediate family members.

Memorial gifts in Brother John Patrick's memory may be made to Our Lady of the Snows Parish, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411, https:www.olsparish.net; or the Franciscan Friars' Retirement Fund, P.O. Box 500, Loretto, PA 15940, www.franciscanstor.org.

Guestbook

When I think of our Holy Rosary Class of '62, I am grateful for the many special members and the many special memories we shared.   John was a loving friend and even though I hadn't seen him in many years,  he kept in touch until several years ago.  John shared his years of teaching,  relating funny stories about his experiences and connecting them to our days at Holy Rosary.  His letters were very distinctive with John's beautiful, cursive writing. We never did have that reunion we had hoped for this year, but we are better for having had John in our lives.RIP, John. You will be missed.Mary Homer Dunwoody

Our lives will    never be the same..... in keeping with his personality, he did not speak to me for 40n years....only to call men a few months ago and we talked and laughed for two hours with a plan that he would come and stay with  me for a few days and we would get together with our high school friends and laugh, laugh, laugh.... God had other plans. He always tried to do what was right. he was always close to God and now I am sure he is in heaven. he will look over all of us and through his intercession, maybe I will hear from him more often in the ensuing years.RIP my life long friend.

How appropriate that John entered the religious life. I have many fond memories of him in Holy Rosary Latin class. One of our his favorite hymns was “Haec dies quam fecit Dominus”, (this is the day that the Lord has made) I think of him every time I hear it.  He was a wonderful person and a great friend.Condolences to his family.
